Shutter Island

Da hat Martin Scorsese mal wieder was Feines abgeliefert.
Die ersten 30 Minuten des Films sind schon ein wenig platt, denn Gefangeneninsel, Gewitter und Sturm, wenig Licht, schräge Typen und jede Menge "Psychos" sind für mich nicht unbedingt Dinge die einen film noir begründen sondern allenfalls eine übertriebene Aneinanderreihung von Klischees. Zum Glück hab ich den Anfang mit ein wenig Gähnen überstanden und weitergeschaut.

Im weiteren Verlauf hat mich dieser Film nämlich wirklich gefesselt und zwar hauptsächlich aufgrund des äußerst fein konstruierten, undurchschaubaren Plots sowie der Tatsache das das Ende des Films für den Betrachter nicht vorgegeben wird. Zwei Handlungsstränge sind hier bis zum Schluß (und darüber hinaus) möglich und somit wären auch 2 verschiedene Wertungen bzw. Enden möglich.

Auch wenns mir schwerfällt muß ich Leonardo di Caprio hier für seine schauspielerische Leistung loben, bei Ben Kingsley verkneif ich mir das...der steht wie immer über jeder Kritik und das ist gut so.

Wer gerne rätselt und auch gern mal sehen möchte wie man, theoretisch, einen Menschen psychisch komplett umdrehen kann, der sollte sich Shutter Island nicht entgehen lassen.

Dr. Parnassus und Sherlock Holmes

An diesem Wochenende haben wir aufgrund von Bereitschaftsdienst und akuter Faulheit gleich 2 aktuelle Kinofilme nacheinander angeschaut. Da ich ja nun nicht gerade als ein TV Freund gelte, war alleine der Ansatz schon eine ziemliche Leistung.

Das Kabinett des Dr. Parnassus ist ein Film den ich mir nur 15 Minuten ansehen mußte um dann dringend Nachforschungen zum Regisseur anzustellen und um dann, na klar, heraus zu finden das diese liebevolle, spleenige und detaillierte Regie-Handschrift nur Terry Gilliam gehören kann. Ich habe die Monty Python Filme nicht nur wegen ihres Humors geliebt, sondern, genau wie Time Bandits, wegen Ihrer tollen Umsetzung und der sogenannten atmosphärischen Dichte. Das Kabinett des Dr. Parnassus ist die logische Fortsetzung. Und wem sich der Charme dieses abgefahrenen Fantasy Films nicht erschließt, der kann den Film zumindest als kurzzeitigen Ersatz für den Genuß bewusstseinserweiternder Mittel verwenden.

Bei der Neufassung von Sherlock Holmes verhält es sich ein wenig anders. Hier ist kein absoluter Regisseur Stempel zu erkennen und eigentlich ist es nur wieder ein neuer Film, der einen alten Klassiker mit ordentlich Actionszenen aufpeppt. Da wir beide die Sherlock Holmes Bücher des Arthur Conan Doyle sehr gerne mochten, waren wir natürlich auf diesen Film sehr gespannt und besonders Julia, als sozusagen stalinistische Film Kritikerin, erwartete hier nichts Gutes. Kurz gesagt: In diesem Film ist viel von Arthur Conan Doyles Beschreibungen geblieben, nur nicht die Hauptakteure Sherlock Holmes und Dr. Watson. Und genau das ist vermutlich einer der Pluspunkte dieses Films: Eben nicht den millionenfach beschriebenen Sherlock Holmes zum 100ten Mal nachstellen, sondern einfach frei interpretieren. In diesem Film ist Holmes eben deshalb eine Art verlotterter, introvertierter aber genialer Exzentriker der sich auch gerne einmal prügelt und sich mit seinen, für die Zeit schockierenden Ein- und Ausfällen, und seinem, für viele, eigenartigen Humor, nicht besonders viele Freunde schafft.
Was geblieben ist und eindrucksvoll dargestellt wird sind die Genialität und der Humor mit dem Holmes und Watson ihren Fall lösen. Neben all dem fand ich persönlich die Darstellung des alltäglichen Lebens im London des späten 19. Jahrhunderts außerordentlich gelungen. Alles in Allem ein kurzweiliger, absolut sehenswerter Film!

Slumdog Millionaire

Irgendwie hab ich mich immer davor gedrückt mir Slumdog Millionaire anzusehen weil ich befürchtete das es ein furchtbar melancholisches Drama sein würde. Ist es eigentlich auch. Aber der Film hat mich gut unterhalten, hat einige Schock und Überraschungsmomente und eine interessante Story ist ihm ja nun wirklich nicht abzusprechen. Es werden ja auch alle möglichen typischen Charaktere abgebildet: der edle Ritter der nur auf der Suche nach seiner Herzallerliebsten ist, der Typ vom Slumdog zum Mafioso, die skrupellosen Folterknechte und und und. Highlights sind für mich in der Kameraführung. Da gibt es einige sehr tolle Aufnahmen die sich bei mir richtig festgebrannt haben.
Aber der Film kann sicherlich nicht nur unterhalten sondern auch zum Nachdenken anregen. Falls durch den hochprämierten Film eine Moral oder ein besonderer Sinn vermittelt werden sollte, hat er sich mir allerdings nicht erschlossen.

Und das Happy End ist zwar berechtigt, aber ein paar Nummern zu pathetisch geraten. Trotz allem: Sehenswert

Gran Torino

Clint Eastwood? Lebt der noch?? Ja, tut er. Und er hat mit 78 Jahren einen neuen Film gemacht. Als Regisseur hat er sich auch gleich selbst als Hauptrolle besetzt und das ist auch gut so.

Worum geht's in dem Film? Ein alter, sehr konservativer Koreaveteran grantelt und miesepetert sich durch sein Leben. Klagt über den Werteverlust und die Überfremdung heutzutage. Als echter Ami aus dem Midwesten natürlich imemr mit der Knarre im Anschlag. Das er durch seine Initiative gegen Straßengangs selbst zum Helden der ausländischen Nachbarn wird, verblüfft ihn zunächst und er fühlt sich nicht wohl dabei. Später wird die Beziehung zu den von ihm gerne als "Bambusratten" oder "Frühlingsrollen" bezeichneten Nachbarn immer inniger und familiärer und man könnte schon fast von Harmonie sprechen!

Der Film ist ein ruhiges und sehr intensives Drama. Eine Charakterstudie die ohne Action und Krach auskommt. Hier wird beobachtet und der Zuschauer findet sich plötzlich im Leben und im Leid des Walt Kowalski (Clint Eastwood) wieder. Trotz des stereotyps eines alten, mauligen Sacks spielt Eastwood hier einen Charakter der absolut authentisch wirkt. Trauer, Selbstzweifel, Wut und Verzweiflung!! Klasse Leistung! Der Film hat mich gefesselt, von der ersten bis zur letzten Minute.

96 Hours

Als ich diesen Film gestern abend eingelegt hab und etwa 15 Minuten gesehen hatte, dachte ich: "Hoppla...was ist denn das? Ein Drama mit Liam Neeson als Hauptdarsteller?? Gibt's doch nicht..."
Gab es auch tatsächlich nicht denn schon bald nahm der Film richtig Fahrt auf. Die Story ist so simpel wie der Charakter des Hauptdarstellers. Ein wildgewordener Papa der seine entführte Tochter aus den Fängen eines albanischen Mädchenhandler Rings befreien will. Der Film gibt keine Chance sich zu langweilen, hat ein paar tolle Action Szenen und eine komplett unglaubwürdige Handlung. Aber es ist ja nunmal kein Dokumentarfilm.
Ein klassischer Action Film der sich nicht um die Schnelligkeit, Brutalität und die Anzahl der Morde schert. Unterhaltung eben und das mit rasantem Tempo.

Das Lazarus Projekt

Na, der Inhalt hört sich doch interessant an:
Kleinganove wird beim Bruch erwischt, zum Tode verurteilt und hingerichtet. Nach der Hinrichtung erwacht er jedoch in einem neuen Leben und hat scheinbar ein neues Leben, eine zweite Chance bekommen.
Schöne Story, ich mag sowas. Es darf gerätselt werden, ob es sich wirklich um eine "himmlische Gabe" handelt, ob der Engel echt ist, oder ob das Ganze doch am Ende nur eine fiese, menschenverachtende Aktion ist. Na, der Titel lässt da eigentlich kaum Zweifel aufkommen. Der Film ist recht düster und eintönig verfilmt. Die Schockmomente sind rar, die Schauspieler bis auf 2 Ausnahmen blass und der sympathische Hauptdarsteller kommt eine Stunde lang mit einem einzigen Gesichtsausdruck aus.
Auch der Überrschungseffekt am Ende bleibt aus, denn nach etwa 70 Minuten wird einem schon in etwa klar was hier los ist.
Trotzdem ist es ein netter Film. Nicht mehr und nicht weniger. Jedenfalls keine Zeitverschwendung.

Righteous Kill - Kurzer Prozess

A movie starring Al Pacino AND Robert deNiro? Could it go wrong at all?? When I read about Righteous Kill I was fascinated because I like both actors very much. Yesterday finally I was able to watch that movie. Here is the story in brief:

The film begins with a scene in which the police investigator Turk seems to confess that he has killed fourteen people. In a flashback those acts are fractionally shown.
Turk and his colleague Rooster are working as police officers in New York City. They investigate a murder case and find out that there are similarities to a previous case on which they were working some years before. At that time the killer was arrested. Turk and Rooster now are suspicious if the arrested person at that time really was the killer or if it was a serial killer who is now active again.

During the new investigations it is getting more and more clear that the killer must have been a policeman. Finally Turk gets the logical target of the investigation, because he was involved in the investigations of nearly every murder case.

So much for the story. To make it short: Good actors - poor story book. There is a real surprise at the end of the film...none of us expected it to end like this. But generally there are too many stereotypes for me: the black drug dealer (50 Cent) the stupid blonde, the Macho-Latino...it is all in here!
With this setup and the good idea, it could have been a perfect movie. But all that is left in the end is the pleasure to see really cool and professional actors like Pacino and DeNiro playing theie roles with a 100%.
Nice movie to watch but nothing spectacular.

Almost Famous

Finally again I found a film to watch, that leaves a good feeling in the end. It transports the spirit of the 70s in a charming way. Highly recommended for those born around 1960-1965.

The story:
San Diego, 1973: The 15-year-old William dreams to be a big rock critics one day - despite or perhaps because his mother scents only drugs and unrestrained sex behind this music . Then the shy teen gets an unexpected offer from the famous Rolling Stone magazine: He should be guiding the emerging band Stillwater on their "Almost Famous" tour. On that tour he experiences not only the life in the fast lane, but also the "Band Aid" Penny Lane, who, however, only has eyes for the charismatic guitarist Russell ...

The fourth, highly autobiographical film by "Jerry Maguire" director Cameron Crowe from the year 2000 is a tribute to his own youth and the beloved rock'n'roll. With a lot of heart, wit and detail, he draws an accurate portrait of the 70s and sets a dignified memorial to this big rock era.

The film is really charming, but for my taste a bit too long with nearly 2 hours. It is giving a look behind the scenes of the rock business of the 70s, about truth, loyalty, friendship and pretence. But in the end, the triple Happy-End was a bit too much ánd implausible for me.
However, I felt myself very well entertained and loved that trip back in time, back to the Rock-era. A consistent nostalgia trip not only for "flower children".

Transsiberian

Well done Brad Anderson! Here is my recommendation for a movie that you should go and watch in a cinema.

Transsiberian is different to other movies. It takes a long time for the viewer to find out what this film could be all about. Watching th efirst third, you may think you are watching a romance drama. Then it turns into a classical railroad-psycho-thriller and in the end you are watching kind of an action movie with horror elements. The story is about Roy (Woody Harrelson) and Jessie (Emily Mortimer). They did some charity church work in China and now decided to take the Transsiberian Train from Bejing to Moscow. More than 9000 kilometres and 7 days on a train! They meet different people on the train and a young couple that obviously carries some secrets with them. The whole train seems to be full of secrets and mysterious characters and
besides wondering where the action of this film will be leading to, I was really fascinated by the way how nicely the actors draw those characters. Especially Emily Mortimer acted pretty well!! Another, oviously dark, charactere is the police-agent Ilya (Ben Kingsley). Until the last minute I was not able to find out on which side he stands...

This movie really took my attention from the first until the last minute. High tension and best entertainment without a lot of action and blood. It took until the last minute to get behind the mysteries of the story and its protagonists.

Watch it!!

The Day The Earth Stood Still

Beware of this movie. It wants to be a Drama, Science Fiction and Action movie in one. Good intention but it did not work out too well. The story however sounds interesting and I did not know that this movie was only a remake of the famous original from 1951.

Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) as the representative of an extraterrestrial race came to earth to find out if the human race could still find a way to avoid the increasing climate change on earth. When he saw that there was no hope left, he decided to save the earth as a very valueable planet and that nessesarily meant to destroy the human race. A female scientist (Jennifer Connelly) and her son are trying to convince him that the human race is not that bad and stupid as he may think.

As I said, the story sounds interesting but in this movie it is all going without any special tension. Keanu Reeves in his suit acted cool as if he was still caught in his "Matrix" role but this time could not give his role any credibility. The whole film is being directed as if the director had a good story book but did not have any idea of how to put it in scene. The action scenes however are pretty cool, but thats not enough for saving the film. In the end there is only the neat
advice to, please, be a little more thoughtful and nice to each other in the future.

I watched the first half with interest and the second half in boredom.

Lost In Translation

Once again: Lost In Translation
I don't know how often I have watched this movie already. Tonight it was time again on TV and again "Lost In Translation" was fascinating me. Scarlett Johansson in her one and only good role and Bill Murray in one of his first movies beyond simple jokes and funny comedy movies.

A melancholic film about human beings being captured in the isolation of a foreign culture and language. Camera and actors both seemed to have the same idea of how this should be expressed. It all fits together very well.

To me this film is getting more and more interesting the more often I watch it. It makes me think about how you can feel lonely even if in a huge crowd. How you can feel lonely even if with so called friends. And that sometimes.....sometimes you just want to have some kind of a soul companion near you. Very near. To give warmth and harmony to each other. Not neccesarily more.
And that is what I like so much in this movie: Two people getting closer by and by, feeling well again and being like accomplices. Without the need of any physical attraction.

This time in the end I was sad: I did not want them to part and to get back to their normal life. I wanted them to continue that impossible dream.

Drachenläufer

Das Buch Drachenläufer von Khaled Hosseini habe ich schon lange auf meiner Liste der dringend zu lesenden Bücher. Da unsere Bücherei nach einem Brand wohl noch einige Monate geschlossen sein wird, und ich mir das Buch nicht kaufen möchte, habe ich mir gestern den Film angesehen der ja sehr eng an den Roman von Khaled Hosseini angelegt sein soll.

Zur Geschichte:

Im afghanischen Kabul, 1975, lebt der 12 jährige Amir, dessen Mutter bei seiner Geburt starb, mit seinem Vater, Baba. Sie genießen großes Ansehen und leben zusammen mit ihrem Hausdiener Ali und dessen Sohn Hassan. Obwohl Standesunterschiede in Afghanistan groß sind und auch gezeigt werden sind die beiden Väter Freunde. Ali wiederum hat einen Sohn, Hassan, und der ist der beste Freund Amirs.

Irgendwann beim spektakulären Drachenfest verspricht Hassan Amir den letzten noch verbleibenden Drachen zu holen um ihm somit den Sieg zu holen. Hassan ist Amirs Drachenläufer. Doch er kehrt nicht zurück, auch nach langem Warten nicht. Schliesslich macht sich Amir auf und findet Hassan der von anderen geschlagen und misshandelt wird. Amir sieht dem zu und bringt nicht den Mut auf seinem Freund zu helfen.

Hassan und Amir Freundschaft hat einen Knacks bekommen doch keiner erwähnt es dirtekt. Die Situation wird immer unerträglicher, bis Amir sich keinen anderen Weg weiß als seinen Freund Hassan zu verraten um ihn loszuwerden. Er bezichtigt ihn des Diebstahls und Ali und Hassan ziehen fort.

Fast 30 Jahre später erhält Amir, mittlerweile in Amerika lebend, einen Brief eines alten Freundes seines Vaters. Darin findet er ein Foto von Hassan und er wird aufgefordert endlich in die Heimat Afghanistan zurück zu kehren...es gibt etwas zu klären...

Ich will nicht zuviel vorweg nehmen, aber es wird sogar im Film eindrücklich gezeigt wie sehr man ein schlechtes Gewissen, ein Schuldgefühl ein Leben lang mit sich schleppen kann. Und das es wohl nie zu spät ist einen Fehler wieder gut zu machen oder es zumindest mit aller Kraft zu versuchen.
Werte wie Freundschaft, Vertrauen und der Mut dazu zu stehen sind die Botschaft des Filmes, der mit über 2 Stunden Laufzeit recht lang geraten ist aber keineswegs langweilig.

Da ich bereits verschiedene Kritiken zu dem Buch gelesen habe, würde ich auf jeden Fall empfehlen erst das Buch zu lesen, da mir in dem Film doch einige Fragen und Gedanken zu sehr vernachlässigt werden bzw. unbeantwortet bleiben.

Der Baader-Meinhof Komplex

Schwer, sehr schwer zu diesem Film zu sagen das er mir gefallen hat. Nicht weil er schwach produziert wurde - die Visualisierung ist in diesem Film eher zweitrangig. Nicht weil ich gewisse Sympathien für grundlegende Gedanken habe - political correctness ist mir scheissegal. Aber diese Menschenverachtung die diese Spinner der RAF da an den Tag legten ist wirklich kaputt.

Der Film bringt das Ganze in seiner Entwicklung allerdings ganz gut. Angefangen mit den Studenten Protesten zum Schah Besuch in Deutschland über die Ermordung von Benno Ohnesorge und die Agit Szene um Rudi Dutschke. Irgendwie schien die studentische Szene damals einfach intellektuell viel weiter gewesen zu sein als die vergreisten Politiker.
Für mich nachzuvollziehen ist ein daraus entstehender Anarchismus. Ein Abdriften in einen extremen Terrorismus, ohne Maß, der sich auch gegen die richtet die doch eigentlich die Begünstigten einer Revolution sein sollten, ist ein Terror der wohl kaum noch zielgerichtet war sondern vielmehr ein übergroßes Ego selbstbefriedigen wollte.

Ich habe Anfang der 1990er die Dokumentation von Stefan Aust gesehen und fand sie hervorragend. Dasselbe Material wurde sicherlich hier verwendet (wie auch im Abspann erwähnt) um das Ganze als Spielfilm auszupeppen. Glaubwürdiger, genauso intensiv und, logo, authentischer fand ich die Doku auf jeden Fall.

Trotz aller Kritik muss ich aber zugeben das der Film hier nichts verherrlicht. Hier werden Terroristen nicht als brutale aber doch irgendwie menschen- und freiheitsliebende Zeitgenossen verklärt. Eine Verbrüderung im Geiste findet nicht statt. Dafür muss man dem Regisseur Bernd Eichinger gratulieren...er hat kaum etwas hinein interpretiert und das ist bei dieser Gratwanderung zwischen Massenproduktion und kritischem Umgang mit dem heiklen Thema sicher nicht leicht gewesen.

Rogue

Yesterday I saw the film "Rogue"...here are some words about it:
The arrogant Journalist Pete McKell joins a boat safari in the Outbacks of Australia. The film begins with beautiful photos of the breathtaking nature there and it could also be the beginning of a nature-documentary.

The characteres in this film are being described and there is the attractive captain of the boat, "Kate", as well as some very special and wacky persons as the tourists on this boat safari. They all want to see crocodiles and it does not take long until they see the first big ones. For some reason they run ashore of a small island in the middle of the big river, the boat is wrecked, and now they are searching for a way to leave the island before high tide comes in. Unfortunately this river seems to be the district of a monstrous crocodile and it does not take long until croco has caught its first victims from the stranded tourist group.

Even if the plot sounds somehow silly, it is entertaining. There are a several reasons for that. It is not a long film, just under 90 minutes and the producing director did not make the big mistake to oversize the crocodile. His crocodile is big, but not gigantic, intelligent, but still an animal. And most of all, which is extremely important, the computer animated crocodile looks like real!

There are some scenes that made me smile though: After the first 2 people have been caught by the crocodile, there does not seem to be any real mourning amongst the rest of the grup, not even the relatives seem to be really shocked.
Building up a suspense curve or rising the tension slowly did not really work here. No wonder, anyone who looks at this film can imagine what will happen. The story of a monstrous animal threatening human beings is so old and in any new movie of this kind it is only interesting HOW the story has been converted in to a movie.
The final fight scene between the main actors and the croco is silly, implausible and unbelievable...fortunately it takes not too much of the film, and hey, this ain't a documentary.

Watching this film was not a waste of time for me. This is an unpretentious, technically solid produced animal-horror movie about a group of tourists being threatened by a crocodile. It is holding back too many violent and/or splatter scenes and presents some really atmospheric views of nature.
If you make it to the end-credits, you will even listen to the funny song of "Never Smile At A Crocodile"

I'm Not There

This film was difficult to get into but for the same reason it was even more thrilling and entertaining. It is said to be a film with autobiographical pieces of the life of Bob Dylan. The name "Bob Dylan" though does not appear in any scene on the film.

So it is a combination of real and surreal pieces.

When I watched this movie, I expected an autobiograhical movie in the classical way and needed a lot of time to get comfortably into the film because there is no real plot...no timeline, no chronology where you as a viewer could cling too. There are a several different identities trying to display the variety of the person "Bob Dylan".

For example:
The 11 year old Woody Guthrie, playing a fantastic accoustic session with Richie Havens (in reality, Woody Guthrie was one of the few persons that Bob Dylan really looked up to)

Jack Rollins, the Folk Music sensation, a difficult charactere, singing for the common people about simple life and expressing what others would like to say. The early Bob Dylan for sure.

Richard Gere, as Billy the Kid, was supposed to reflect the older Bob Dylan...but I must admit that I never got behind the meaning really. I am too simple for such stuff and I am too less into american history as well.

The artist Jude Quinn is the main plot of the film...and Jude Quinn (surprisingly good played by Cate Blanchett!!!!!), arrogant, ingenious, selfish and always thinking two thoughts ahead of others is playing Bob Dylan as he always appeared in my eyes. I like some of Bob Dylans songs and he sure is an outstanding personality, but generally I always disliked his terrible way of performing and his even more terrible obtrusive voice. He is one of the persons that was always really going on my nerves.
The film however was better to me. I thought it would be a hommage to Bob Dylan, telling everyone what an ingenious god he was and is. But the film was good to look at. It keeps your brain moving...giving you pushes to think further.

Sometimes all this is drifting away into heavy surreal dreams...as if you were under heavy drug influence of which I am sure Bob Dylan has spent a lot of time of his life. But one cool sentence I took with me from this film:
"It is as if yesterday, today and tomorrow are all in one room. You never know what's gonna happen then."

For the german viewers: the german voice of "Jude Quinn", which is taking most of the time of the film is simply terrible. I mean...Bob Dylan sure has a terrible voice, but not that terrible

National Treasure: Book Of Secrets

This film is perfect for those who like Indiana Jones movies and something like Da Vinci Code. National Treasure: Book Of Secrets is a mix of both genres. Kind of an adventurous thriller.

The story is as usual: Some good ones searching for a hidden treasure to extract the historical informations and some bad ones searching for the same treasure to extract money, gold and prosperities from it.
Fairly funny dialogues and a treasure hunt at high speed keep you really busy with watching and trying to understand the story. In the middle of the film you finally discover that the story is not important at all.

The whole story is not really logical if you see how easily the protagonists in this film are able to get into Buckingham Palace, The Oval Office and how easily they solve every new riddle in just a few minutes. We had a good laugh at the way of how the scenes have been constructed sometimes...especially when it came to the hijacking of the US President. But this ain't no documentary, it is an entertaining movie. And it was entertaining me very well. Recommended.

Definitely, Maybe

Feeling down and out...without internet and telephone...that was my situation on monday night. Time to go to bed early and watch kind of an easy and lowbrow movie. If you will ever be in the same situation, here is the perfect film to watch then:

Will Hayes (Ryan Reynolds), a New York commercials specialist is about to get divorced. He is spending an evening with his 10 year old daughter and she is asking him to tell her his story about how Will met her Mom and fell in love with her.
Will tells her the story of the 3 women in his life...he changes the names and lets his daughter guess who of those 3 women finally became her mother.
The story starts 1992 during the election campaign of Bill Clinton and is a typical Romance/Complicated-Relations story. Not much to tell about the story even though there are some surprising and unexpected moments. To me it is a typical womens movie, strange enough that I did not fell asleep before the end. The reason why I was still awake after 117 minutes were the actors. I have not seen them on screen before and especially the female actors (Elizabeth Banks, Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher) were not the perfect looking hollywood actresses, as to be seen in hundreds of movies before. Everyone of them had this special something (in my eyes) and that is what kept me watching this movie til the end.
Needless to mention that Kevin Kline (in the role of Professor Hampton Roth) is -as always- above any possible critics...don't you even dare!!!

As I said...the story of this film is not spectacular. The way how it is being told (from Dad to daughter) and the well chosen actors make it a nice and easy going romance movie.

Free Rainer - Dein Fernseher lügt

Nach den vielen Mainstream Filmen der letzten Tage habe ich heute mal wieder einen erwischt der nicht nur unterhaltend sondern auch kritisch ist, bei dem man sich auch mal ein paar grundlegende Gedanken machen kann. Die Gedanken die diesem Film zugrunde liegen habe ich für mich persönlich allerdings schon durch.

Es geht in dem Film um Massen TV, Quoten, Manipulation bzw. Beeinflussung der öffentlichen Meinung durch Trash bzw. Schrott Fernsehen. Es ist also keine Utopie die in dem Film behandelt wird...wird sind schon mittendrin! Wer es nicht glaubt, möge sich einmal intensiv das Fernsehprogramm eines Tages ansehen, die entsprechenden Einschaltquoten dazu nehmen und dann wird sich doch zumindest ein leichtes Kopfschütteln einstellen.

Der Film an sich fängt stark und beeindruckend an, flacht aber nach einer halben Stunde extremst ab. Wäre da nicht die Story die einen immer beschäftigt, würde man das große Gähnen kriegen. Man kann diesen "Agitfilm" wohl vergleichen mit "Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei" allerdings sind in "Free Rainer" die Schauspieler entweder blass oder übertrieben spleenig während in "Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei" richtig glaubwürdig und authentisch geschauspielert wurde. Mit den Attributen kann "Free Rainer" allerdings nicht aufwarten. Alles nicht so wirklich überzeugend.

Trotz seiner Längen ist der Film absolut sehenswert! Der Anspruch an den Zuschauer wird zwar ein wenig niedrig gehalten, aber so ist das numal in unserer heutigen Medienwelt ;-).....

No Good Deed (The House on Turk Street) is an American-German Thriller from the year 2002 based on the novel „The House on Turk Street“ from Dashiell Hammett, 1924

While searching for a runaway teenager, the cop Jack (Samuel L. Jackson) is taken hostage by a group of criminals who are planning a bank robbery.
Jack is being left alone with the gang leader's girlfriend Erin (Milla
Jovovich) to watch over him while the others of the gang going to execute their plan of robbing the bank. Jack and Erin are getting closer and from that time on there is a lot of trouble between the members of the gang. Everyone seems to be eager to get near Erin and to make a conspiracy plan with her against the others.

The film did not really catch much of my attention. There are some close looks into the psyche of every protagonist and the characteres even had something (unintentional?) funny but I was missing a clear story and any surprising moment. Samuel L. Jackson to me is not a really good actor, in this film he gets along with one single face expression. Adorable Milla Jovovich however plays really good and expressive...well, she is much too charming and glamorous...far risen above any possible critics!!

Eastern Promises

"Eastern Promises" (german: Toedliche Versprechen) is a calm, somehow mystic and stylish produced "Mafia-Epic", this time playing in the russian scene in London, England. A very intense film playing with morality, crime, intrigue, prejudices and brutality. It gives the viewer enough time to make up his own mind about what is going on and what could be right or wrong, but in between there are scenes crashing the stylish production with (for my oppinion) an extremely detailed brutality.

Not a film for people with weak nerves but a fine drawing of a scene that everyone can imagine to be exactly like this...even if it may be totally different in reality.

The actors in this film (Viggo Mortensen, Armin Mueller-Stahl and oh so wonderfull Naomi Watts) really do well in giving their characters something special, authentic. The story itself is nicely constructed even though it is a bit unbelievable...but hey-this ain't no documentary!! The intriges and criminal intentions make it a film somewhere between thriller and action.
Recommended film with an end that contains sadness as well as happiness.
