Jaja, ich habe soeben in der Zeitung gelesen, das "public viewing" im amerikanischen englisch wohl soviel bedeutet wie eine öffentliche Leichenaufbahrung im Sarg. Stimmt das? Ich weiss das hier ab und zu Leute reinschauen die des englischen wirklich mächtig sind. Bitte um Aufklärung!!Ist doch wirklich total witzig wenn halb Deutschland sich beim "public viewing" befindet, und der Anlass ist ausgerechnet die Deutsche Fussball Nationalmannschaft! Ein Brüller!!
Brüller sind natürlich auch viele andere denglische Worte. Worte bei denen die Deutschen meinen sie klängen locker, international, weltoffen oder was auch immer.
Beispiele?? Handy (cellphone, mobile phone), Schowmaster (host) oder noch besser Callboy -ist das nicht im englischen ein Souffleur??? Diese Anregungen habe ich heute im "Weser Kurier" gelesen. Wem noch was einfällt oder wer mich korrigieren möchte soll das bitte gerne tun.

"public viewing will be available between the hours of 11-3" yah, you can go see the body during the hours listed.
i don't think the term is specific to this though. i think we use it for other things too. i can't think of any right now, sorry.
pet peeve of mine: "happy end" wth!!! there is no such phrase in english. it's happy ENDING. noun. grr.
but i do think it's funny when my students ask about the word handy. they cannot fathom that we don't use this word. they ask me to confirm it, "really? what are they called then!?" i say, "i call mine a cell phone."
i've been reading expat blogs about americans living in germany, and i found it interesting to read about their reactions upon visiting america again. since i've never been away from home so long in my life (1 year!) i can't wait! i will certainly blog about how absurd and scary-strange america is!
one thing i look forward to: being blown away when i order a small drink. i expect it will be the size of a large in europe. woo: ) and free water at restaurants. most of all, i look forward to walking in to some establishment and communicating with perfect ease with employees. or talking to total strangers rapidly. woo!
